Leading Causes of Slipped Discs
A slipped disc, more accurately referred to as a herniated disc or a ruptured disc, occurs when the soft inner core of a spinal disc protrudes through the tough outer layer. The exact cause of a slipped disc is often a combination of factors, and it can result from various circumstances. Here are some common causes:
1. Age-related Wear and Tear:
- As people age, the intervertebral discs naturally lose some of their water content and become less flexible. This process, known as disc degeneration, makes the discs more susceptible to tearing or rupturing.
2. Incorrect Lifting Technique:
- Lifting heavy objects using improper technique, especially when combined with twisting or turning, can place excessive pressure on the spine and lead to a herniated disc.
3. Repetitive Strain:
- Engaging in repetitive activities or motions, especially those involving the spine, without proper rest or conditioning can contribute to disc herniation.
4. Genetic Factors:
- Some individuals may be genetically predisposed to conditions that affect the spine, making them more susceptible to disc herniation.
5. Obesity:
- Excess body weight can place increased stress on the spine, particularly the lower back, and contribute to disc degeneration and herniation.
6. Sedentary Lifestyle:
- Lack of regular exercise and physical activity can weaken the muscles that support the spine, making it more prone to injuries such as disc herniation.
7. Trauma or Injury:
- Sudden trauma or injury, such as a fall, car accident, or a blow to the back, can cause a disc to herniate.
8. Smoking:
- Smoking has been linked to accelerated disc degeneration, potentially increasing the risk of disc herniation.
9. Occupational Factors:
- Jobs or activities that involve frequent bending, lifting, or driving for extended periods may increase the risk of disc herniation.
